Otūmoetai - Kwila Deck and Timber Fence

The house was at the end of a cul-de-sac with many houses on it. They had a low 1-meter-high fence, which meant they had very little privacy.

The clients felt like they couldn't use the front yard of their house, which was essentially the only outdoor area on the property. And so they got us in and asked us if we could remove the fence and put in a higher option so that they could create a cool family hangout, barbecue area and spa.

We removed the existing fencing. We decked out from the house over an awkward step-down concrete area and then continued the decking out over the grass. This created one seamless height straight out from the internal height of the house, which took away from this feeling of a broken-up backyard area that made it feel really small.

Preparation

With the decking nice and flat, it made the yard feel way bigger, and way more usable. The barbecue could sit on the deck with a table and chairs, creating an awesome outdoor hangout area. Next to that was paved out with concrete pavers ready for the spa to be dropped on.

Around the front of the property, we used timber laminata fencing. This was a 1.8m high timber laminata fence, which is a timber laminated tongue and groove panels set between timber, six by two treated posts, all set in concrete with an h-four retaining board at the bottom. That way it can be slightly buried into the ground so that there's no gap underneath the fence.

That created the privacy that they were looking for, as well as a really smart-looking frontage to the house and a really smart-looking area inside for them to use with friends and family.
